Welcome to improve.able Inc.

My name is Matt and I’m the heart and mind behind this mission-driven operation. I’m a veteran, former police officer, and public safety expert with nearly 30 years’ experience in the field.

I began my career in the military, where I gained a profound appreciation for the military’s robust leadership development processes. Transitioning from the military to policing, I recognized a significant gap in leadership training within the law enforcement sector. During my time as a police officer, I routinely experienced half-hearted, uninspiring attempts at reform. I saw a profound need for a new approach—one that blends practical insights with evidence-based strategies. This realization is what drove me to start improve.able Inc.: a recognition that not only could we improve our approach, but that we are able to do so.

I’d like to show you how.

  • My experience includes work in the military, private security, two of Canada’s Big Five banks, and the country’s largest municipal police service. I hold a Master’s degree in Public Policy, Administration and Law from York University, complemented by degrees and diplomas in the fields of Justice Studies, Emergency Management, and Police Foundations.

    I’m also a part-time professor and researcher at one of Canada’s largest public safety schools where I teach undergraduate courses in the school’s Crime and Intelligence Analysis program. I've presented at the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police conference, and my work has been published in Blue Line magazine, Policing Insight, and HQ magazine. This unique combination of academic and real-world experience allows me to leverage a rich, nuanced perspective of the industry.
